One of the largest contemporary Indigenous art collections gets a public home in Katonah.
Becky and David Gochman are giving their collection a public home. Branchline, the Gochman Family Collection’s new exhibition space in Katonah, New York, about an hour north of Manhattan, opens November 6. The name refers to the rail branch lines linking the village to the city, and to the idea of artistic lineages branching outward. The opening show, “Line Break,” draws on the collection’s more than 800 works, one of the largest holdings of contemporary Indigenous art. Until now, the collection has mostly lived in the Gochmans’ Upper East Side home or traveled on loan to museums.
Neue Galerie will reopen its galleries with a 25th anniversary exhibition.
The Neue Galerie New York reopened October 1 after work to improve sustainability and the visitor experience. Café Sabarsky, the bookstore, and the design shop have resumed regular hours. The galleries will return November 12 with the “25th Anniversary Exhibition,” which marks a quarter century since the museum opened in 2001 and brings back signature works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. The collection focuses on Austrian and German art from 1890 to 1940. It spans painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and decorative arts, with Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and Bauhaus figures alongside the Viennese stars.
Chanel opens a 16,000-square-foot boutique in San Diego.
Chanel has opened a 16,000-square-foot boutique at Westfield University Town Center in San Diego. It’s the house’s fifth freestanding store in California, after Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, San Francisco, and Palo Alto. Longtime collaborator Peter Marino designed the two-story building from the ground up, drawing on the midcentury Case Study Houses. The rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, and large sliding glass doors open the interiors to the landscape, creating a distinctly Californian indoor-outdoor flow. Inside, Chanel’s black, white, and beige palette is paired with blue and turquoise tones and wave motifs that reference the coast. Nods to Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment at 31 rue Cambon include an 18th-century lion in the courtyard, a symbol of her star sign, and a commissioned portrait by Norbert Brunner. Works by Vera Lutter, Vik Muniz, and others appear throughout. Upstairs, a VIP lounge opens onto a wraparound terrace.
Victoria Beckham makes her homeware debut.
Victoria Beckham has partnered with German interiors retailer Westwing on her first homeware collection, introducing tableware, textiles, and decorative objects inspired by 19th-century British Arts and Crafts traditions and the visual language of her fashion label. Conceived around the idea of “fashion for the table,” the collection incorporates hammered metal finishes, streamlined silhouettes, and a palette of silver, deep green, and white, alongside chain motifs and shell detailing drawn from Beckham’s ready-to-wear and accessories designs.
MCA Chicago announces a $5 million endowment for women artists.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has announced a $5 million endowment to support collecting work by women artists. The gift comes from board member and entrepreneur Leslie Bluhm on behalf of Chicago’s Bluhm family and was announced at an event on October 5. The endowment honors Madeleine Grynsztejn, who steps down at the end of the year after 18 years as director. She founded the museum’s Women Artists Initiative. It became a philanthropic fund in 2020, five years after the MCA committed to parity for women artists across its programs, and will now be renamed the Madeleine Fund for Women Artists. Grynsztejn said the endowment builds gender parity into the museum’s work for decades to come. The initiative has supported recent exhibitions of Faith Ringgold, Nicole Eisenman, Yoko Ono and Firelei Báez. From 2020 to 2025, more than half of the MCA’s solo shows focused on women artists.
