DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: LATOxLATO

Each handmade object created by Francesco Breganze and Virginia Valentini, the work-and-life partners behind LATOxLATO, delivers a compelling sculptural presence deeply rooted in Italian artistic heritage. The up-and-coming brand's debut collection runs the gamut from vases that resemble Palladian villas to Rationalist-inspired marble candleholders rich in tactile emotions.

Describe what you make: We are two architects that besides designing spaces, decided to create objects and furniture for living spaces.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: We consider every piece as our baby, so it is hard to say which one is the most important, but one that we are more attached to is the Aracne Coffee Table. It’s the only piece that’s exactly 50-50 designed by the two of us. Every other product is more connected to one of the two parents.

Describe the problem your work solves: We don’t really solve problems, but we try to help people make their environment unique.

Describe the project you are working on now: We are working on a new object of daily use that embraces our mission of creating “Unusual Italian Design,” freed from the constraints of fashion and trends but focused on the dialogue between aesthetics and functionality.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We have many different projects on our notebooks. Each one is at a different stage of development so it’s just a matter of focusing on one and bringing it to life!

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Lots of paper! We constantly take notes and sketch possible ideas so we always run out of paper.

What you do when you’re not working: We love cooking for friends and gardening on our terrace. We’d love to watch movies but we never agree on which one to watch, so…

Sources of creative envy: Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini, Ignazio Gardella, Carlo Mollino.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Probably social media. Besides using it for business, which is a totally different story, we feel that spending time on our personal accounts gives us the illusion of relaxation while in reality it is exactly the opposite.
