By appointment only, New York–based conceptual artist and author Sophia Giovannitti has brought her uncanny art-world performance piece, Contract (2022-ongoing), to MIT List Visual Arts Center’s Bakalar Gallery. Within, Giovannitti choreographs and transforms encounters common between artists and those who curate, collect, visit, and even exploit them. This iteration also introduces Negative Carry (2026–), wherein Giovannitti transfers the financial risk tied to her forthcoming book onto a collector or institution. Giovannitti’s work is part of the group exhibition “Performing Conditions,” curated by Natalie Bell and Ramona Ngin.
