APPARATUS

APPARATUS is a New York–based design studio that explores the relationship between lighting, furniture, and objects in immersive environments. Sensual materials such as marble, suede, horsehair, lacquer, and porcelain are combined with patinated brass to create sculptural pieces. Founded in 2012, APPARATUS maintains showrooms in New York and Milan.
APPARATUS’s rich materials and inventive forms give its lighting, furniture, and objects a feeling of depth and surprise. Carefully considering each piece’s visual balance, APPARATUS creates objects that will continue to resonate over time.

LOS ANGELES SHOWROOM OPENING

The New York-based design studio APPARATUS celebrates the grand opening of its Los Angeles, CA showroom space. This will be their third location, after headquarters in New York City and an outpost in Milan. For the first time out West, APPARATUS will establish themselves in the Hollywood neighborhood, internationally recognized as a burgeoning arts and design destination. Co-founders Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson – who met and conceived APPARATUS' initial pieces in Los Angeles about seven years ago – sensed that now was the right time for the studio to take part in the renewed energy and current spotlight on the city.

PORTAL + TASSEL

Portal tables connect the proportions of ancient structures to daily experience. The commanding forms are expressed in thick Italian marble or sandblasted ash. Notches reveal established points of entry, emphasizing the tension between mass and negative space.

METRONOME

The Metronome series evokes the measure and balance of its namesake. A patinated-brass sphere perches atop a conical base, which is hand-wrapped in calf suede to provide a lush tactile contrast.

HORSEHAIR

A robust study of material that evokes the grace and strength of its equine contributor. Wefts of horsehair are combined with brass and etched glass, implying a structural, weight-bearing function for the coarse hair.

LANTERN

The slip-cast porcelain forms of the lantern series float along a rigid brass structure. Their glow is punctuated by finely incised fluting, connecting to the most essential element of historical lanterns—light passing through a delicate protective form. Repeating spheres act as a counterpoint to the sizable shades.

SEGMENT + LARIAT

The translucent resin bases of the segment series lift softly-rounded forms, creating a visual play between density and lightness. The underside of the lacquer tabletops bulge as though being pulled back to the floor, anchoring one form to the other—the holder to the held. Bound together with fluted-brass hardware, the hand-cast resin planes create passages that allow light to move beneath the lustrous surfaces.
