The studio’s award-winning, modern designs have an attention to detail, materiality, and authenticity that exhibit an artfulness uniquely tailored to the client.
Cass Calder Smith may call New York and San Francisco its home bases, but the reach of this interdisciplinary firm extends far beyond thanks to the expertise of its principals and more than three decades in the business.

The Hotel Castro. San Francisco, CA

The Hotel Castro was conceived to feel like part of its residential neighborhood fabric by virtue of its modest size and business model. With only 12 tightly spaced, yet efficiently furnished, micro-units, the hotel serves a decidedly limited number of guests. Cass Calder Smith partnered with interior design consultant Jon De La Cruz to ensure each room would be a unique experience for guests, with custom interior furnishings and wall coverings, and balconies facing the streetscape or the lushly landscaped inner block yards. The ground floor is occupied by a small tavern-restaurant with sidewalk tables and storefront doors that open wide to the street. The roof terrace provides a relief from the street, where small gatherings are framed by sunsets, city lights and skylines and filled with the sights, sounds and smells of the surrounding Castro neighborhood.

Tin Building. South Street Seaport, New York, NY

Cass Calder Smith Architecture & Interiors is the Interior Architect of Record on the 50,000-square-foot, three-story Jean-Georges food hall at the South Street Seaport’s landmark Tin Building. In collaboration with SHoP Architects and Roman & Williams, the historic building has been reconstructed and is now open to the public. CCS has worked with the Howard Hughes Corporation as Interior Designer, Design Architect, and Architect of Record on multiple projects throughout the South Street Seaport. With the firm’s depth of experience, Smith has become a trusted collaborator.

Riverwalk. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Riverwalk is a mixed-use commercial development that consists of a lifestyle center and public park with approximately 36 restaurant and retail spaces, on a 100meter square site in the Taawon district of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Designed around primarily food and beverage tenants, outdoor seating, and a landscaped plaza with reflecting pool, the 100,000 square-foot development delivers a rare pedestrian gathering space in a predominantly car-based neighborhood. Upper-level terraces and shade structures combined with double-height interiors engage both the public thoroughfares and the landscape within.

The Matheson. Healdsburg, CA

The Matheson is a 15,000 square-foot, tri-level, expansive, modern restaurant located in a historic building on Healdsburg’s town plaza in Sonoma, California. The restaurant is an homage to the local artisans, craftspeople, winemakers, and farmers – hence 'the makers' - who have been part of the local agricultural epicurean community for generations.

Dune House. Seadrift, CA

A new house located on the lagoon within the community of Seadrift in Stinson Beach is for owners with two teenage children. As a 2,100 square-foot weekend house, it is meant as a family gathering place for casual dwelling, recreating, entertaining, and connecting with nature. From the street, the breezeway establishes a sense of entry and a departure from the weekly pressures of deadlines and toil - to the sacred from the mundane.

VRAI. Melrose Place, Los Angeles, CA

VRAI is a new retail store for sustainably grown zero emissions diamonds. With locations on Melrose Place in Los Angeles, and in Hayes Valley in San Francisco, VRAI is designed to feel like a gallery, designed with a sense of restraint and clarity that treats the jewelry as art. Craftsmanship is a VRAI brand virtue, and so is the store - from the intimately designed space to the furniture and the fixtures. Their diamonds are crafted sustainably with no carbon footprint and no mining, a process that also informed design decisions as materials were selected.
