Izakaya

The designers worked with a classically trained French chef who, having studied food culture in Japan for more than a year, had developed a passion for izakayas (‘nice places’), the ubiquitous informal Japanese bars that serve slightly more substantial tapas-style meals. The designers worked in collaboration with the classically trained chef to apply a Japanese aesthetic to a Victorian building in Toronto’s historic market, and to create a fun, stylish dining atmosphere that would facilitate fast-food efficiency. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is serene. Honey tones, punctuated with lacquer red, black and metallic gold, reflect traditional Japanese décor. Photography by: David Whittaker

Islington Terrace

Architecturally striking in its sophisticated design, Islington Terrace is located in the heart of one of Toronto’s most desired suburbs, Etobicoke. The Islington Terrace residences have claimed the title of being the tallest towers to grace the Islington City Centre skyline. The interiors act as a celebration of a new community with a stunning 18-foot art installation that resembles a beautiful burst of confetti. This iconic piece in the main lobby serves as a gateway into the residences and gives the illusion that it’s constantly moving. The room is balanced asymmetrically with a signature feature staircase that leads the residents to the second-floor amenities. Photography by: David Whittaker

Kasa Moto

Kasa Moto is a contemporary Japanese restaurant that pays homage to the ancient ideals of wabi (transient and stark beauty), sabi (the beauty of natural patina and aging) and yūgen (profound grace and subtlety). Located in a luxury retail district, the two storey, 12,000 square foot space is spread out over multiple rooms including a split level main floor, dining/wine room, sizable rooftop patio, street side terrace and lounge (Bar Moto) on the upper level. Though designed as a series of vignettes, each with its own personality and ambiance, there is a fluidity to the overall design of Kasa Moto which strikes a fine balance between the simple and the complex.
