Three words to describe this work: Fatherhood, Time, Steadfastness

What was on your mind at the time: I’ve been thinking a lot about how to evolve in this current season of my life. I’ve been defined by my role as a protector and as a father—my kids are grown now and I’ve been reflecting on how we move through and transition in time. I’ve been thinking about my own father and feeling his presence through a red cardinal who has been visiting me every day.

An interesting feature that’s not immediately noticeable: Time! How life keeps moving. You move with it, or it leaves you behind. So, I move. Time is coded throughout my work, through the striation and lines, layers and numerology.

How the work reflects your practice as a whole: In life there are many layers. My paintings always contain multiple layers, some are more visible than others, but that building is very important to my work. Texture is the life in all my work.

One song that captures the work’s essence: Walk By Faith, Tye Tribbett, 2022.
