Since it opened almost exactly one year ago, chef Flynn McGarry’s café and homeware shop Gem Home has attracted a cult following for pieces like Shane Gabier’s ceramic soap dispensers, which have sold out several times over, with each restock punctuated by a months-long wait. Diners at Cove, McGarry’s new Hudson Square fine dining concept, will also recognize glassware and cutlery by David Mellor, another designer whose works are stocked at Gem Home.
But it’s with textile atelier Autumn Sonata that McGarry has embarked on his own design journey with a capsule collection of kitchen textiles he created with Autumn Sonata founder (and alumna of The Row) Lilli Elias.
McGarry’s travels have long informed his approach to culinary and design, and his foray into textiles is no different. The chef credits a preoccupation with Japanese Edo Stripes with inspiring the collection’s tablecloths, napkins, placemats, and apron.“When I first saw the Edo stripe in Japan, I was struck by its simplicity and elegance, it felt like the kind of pattern that lives comfortably in any space,” McGarry told Surface ahead of the collection’s launch.
“Partnering with Lilli and Autumn Sonata was a natural choice,” he continues. Together, he and Elias realized the collection in homey and autumnal hues of butter yellow and earthy brown, with each piece crafted from 100 percent linen. “We share a deep appreciation for heritage textiles and thoughtful craftsmanship,” says McGarry. “Together we wanted to create a collection that celebrates everyday rituals and the beauty of intentional living.”
