Designer of the Day

Designer of the Day: Stephanie Suberville, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Heirlome

When Monterrey, Mexico–born, New York City–based designer Stephanie Suberville co-founded the women’s ready-to-wear label Heirlome with her husband, Jeffrey Axford, in 2022, her vision as creative director interknit collaboration with artisans in Mexico and Latin America. Since its debut, each Heirlome collection—a distinct, purposeful weaving of modern aesthetic and traditional skill—has utilized either print, pattern, embroidery, or craft technique as a means to spotlight artisan talent. Heirlome’s extensive critical success has included Suberville’s 2025 acknowledgement by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, and 2026 CFDA membership. Now, the label is working toward its first show—slated for fashion week this September.

Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Occupation: Designer/Creative Director and Founder of Heirlome

Instagram: @heirlome

Home Town: Originally from Monterrey, Mexico; living in New York City since 2004

Studio Location: Garment District, New York City

Describe what you make: Women’s ready-to-wear apparel including dresses, tops and shirts, skirts, blazers, outerwear, trousers and tailoring.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The wedding dress for one of my best friends. She married my cousin—it was a beautiful moment of friends and family coming together.

Describe the problem your work solves: I hope my work makes women feel beautiful and confident. When its comes to “problem” solving I hope that the collaborations we create with artisans in Mexico and Latin America bring opportunities to those talented people who live to create and that we bring awareness to their crafts.

Share the project you are working on now: I’m starting to work on our Spring 2027 collection, I’ve loved every artisan collaboration we have done so far but this one is especially close to my heart. It’s one that has been in the works since 2023.

What you absolutely have to have in your studio: Diet Coke (this is a must) and lots of excess room to make a mess (drape and play with fabrics)

What you do when you’re not working: I’m working all the time these days, but when I’m not in the office I’m hanging out with my kids and my husband.

Sources of creative envy (dead or alive): I don’t know if I would call it envy, but I’ve been a lifelong Frida Kahlo fan. I’ve been inspired by her my whole life.

The distraction you want to eliminate: I do waste a lot of time watching TV, a lot of Bravo. I’m not sure I would want to eliminate that completely but maybe I need to tone it down, I do love the Housewives though.
