Composed of sconces, flush mounts, and the modular Cosmos Chandelier, as well as two drinking vessels, New York–based design studio In Common With’s limited-edition Lido Series marks the first in an ongoing partnership with Murano glass producer Laguna~B. Future. Designed by In Common With co-founders Nick Ozemba and Felicia Hung, the collection infuses a contemporary sense of wonder with heritage Murano production.

Two traditional glassmaking techniques feature here: goti de fornasa and murrine. The former emerged from an improvisational practice, where glassmakers use leftover molten glass to create one-of-a-kind drinking vessels. The latter requires layering and stretching colored glass into rods, then slicing them to reveal intricate cross-sections. The artisanal skill and artistic instinct required by both methods are reflected throughout the collaborative series.

“Contemporary design doesn’t need to separate itself from histories of making in order to feel relevant or forward-looking,” Ozemba tells Surface. “For us, this collection is about participating in a living tradition, allowing historic techniques and material knowledge to evolve through new systems, contexts, and new forms of collaboration while still respecting the integrity of where and the histories of how the work is made.”

Ozemba and Hung also see this series as a statement that affirms their design vision, and their collaborative production model with global craftspeople. “Since founding the studio eight years ago, we’ve been producing work that balances craftsmanship with scalable production, creating work that has precision and irregularity,” he adds. “Rather than treating design as static or purely stylistic, we approach it as something living and adaptive, where material, process, and collaboration actively shape the final objects we make.”
