Tarini Sethi Turns Stainless Steel Into a Walk-Through Utopia for Frieze Sculpture

New Delhi-based artist Tarini Sethi draws on India's artistic traditions, from mythology and miniature painting to tribal art, to imagine utopias where the body can transform without limits. Her latest work, "The Sun Bathes Its Friends and Neighbours" (2026), is on view through November 1 at Frieze Sculpture in London's Regent's Park, presented by Rajiv Menon Contemporary. The piece is made of four stainless-steel panels depicting hybrid figures, but light is its true medium. As the sun moves across the park, the panels cast layered shadows that stretch their forms far beyond the steel itself. The effect nods to Western modernism, from László Moholy-Nagy's photograms to Robert Rauschenberg's white paintings, while also recalling Indian shadow puppetry. Over the course of the exhibition, dust and patina will settle on the surface, tying the sculpture even more to its surroundings.

Drawing from India's canon, Sethi imagines utopias where the body is a site of boundless transformation. …

An interesting feature that’s not immediately noticeable: The kinetic faces that hang on every screen that moves with the wind.

How the work reflects your practice as a whole: The sculpture is an amalgamation of my practice as a whole. It talks of utopian futures, myths and symbolism from India, focuses on the body as a site of infinite possibility and uses the Sun as a conductor of theatre that moves and shifts the sculpture through the day.

One song that captures the work’s essence: Sunshine by Jungle.
