Michael Hennessey Architecture

A San Francisco architecture studio devoted to detailing, craft, proportion, and harnessing the wonders of natural daylight. Working with clients in a collaborative manner to address specific needs in a rigorous and inspired way is at the core of the office's ethos. Since 2009, MHA has found joy in approaching each project as a unique design endeavor that responds to particular site, budget, and programmatic requirements.

Twin Peaks Residences

This project converts a neglected single-family residence into a 3-unit residential building on the eastern slope of Twin Peaks in San Francisco, allowing for sweeping views of the city from each of the five floors at the rear of the building. The front elevation is a composition of steel frames with aluminum windows and integrally colored cement plaster infilling the steel framework. Sheer curtains and walnut wood veneer at the interior spaces add layers of warmth and variation to an otherwise taught exterior massing.

Peninsula Addition/Renovation

A young family approached us to create a greater connection between the interior of their ranch-style bungalow and the rear yard. The proposed kitchen, family room, office, and master suite were designed to open the home to the outdoors.

Diamond Heights Renovation

For this interior renovation to an existing 1965 Eichler we decided to strike a balance between the positive, inherent qualities of an Eichler structure with modern improvements that enhance rather than compete with the existing building.  The existing post & beam structure is accentuated, creating a layered composition of structure, wood veneer, concrete, and tile elements.

Laidley Street Residence

A rare empty lot in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco served as the site for this ground-up residence. The design goal of the project was to harness natural light throughout the day, capture views of a wind-swept park, and to make a strong visual connection to the split-level road at the front of the property.

Franklin Street Residences

This two-unit residential building proposes an alternate organization of conventional building strategies found throughout San Francisco. At the front elevation, a modern bay window is employed, responding to the scale and rhythm of the more traditional bay windows found on this street.

Green Street Renovation

This apartment renovation for a retired couple harnesses natural daylight and maintains a quietness to the finished materials to expand the perceived size of each space. A careful reconfiguration of the floor plan brings the distant view of San Francisco Bay deep into the apartment. The placement of a minimal kitchen and master bathroom “core” located in the center of the apartment, allows the rest of the spaces to remain open and unencumbered.
