DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Studio SFW

In 2021, Studio SFW partners Rachael Stollar, Erin Fearins, and Ward Welch closed one chapter of their careers as colleagues at a New York architecture and design firm as they left to open their own studio. In the intervening years, the trio has expanded their client base beyond the tri-state area and has thrown open the doors to their retail enterprise, House SFW, located in Upstate New York. In the studio’s latest venture, Stoller, Fearins, and Welch are consulting on the design of a yet-to-be-revealed “agricultural, hospitality, and entertainment destination” in the Appalachian Highlands of Tennessee.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Highly personalized private residences throughout New York City, the Hamptons, Connecticut, and the Hudson Valley.

Describe the problem your work solves: We focus on designing homes that combine function and beauty for our clients. Our designs are timeless and support the lifestyle each client seeks to enjoy.

Describe the project you are working on now: We are renovating a country estate in Connecticut, integrating multiple structures and surrounding landscape as well as full interior design.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We currently have two projects in Palm Beach, Florida: an apartment with a pool cabana and a modern beachfront house. These are both renovations of existing spaces and will include full interior design.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: A revolving collection of art and antiques alongside a permanent collection of dogs who keep us inspired.

What you do when you’re not working: Traveling and sourcing unique finds for House SFW, our upstate shop. You might also find us hosting whimsical dinner parties, practicing chaos gardening, or avoiding shark attacks on Long Island.

Sources of creative envy: Suebelle, a former fitness model and Palm Beach influencer! Otherwise the list would be too long.

The distraction you want to eliminate: The smartphone for starters. That would help people traverse stairs more efficiently.
