“I wanted to make something that was for the American way of life.”

These opening lines of the trailer for the new documentary Heath Ceramics: The Making of a California Classic come straight from company founder Edith Heath’s writings, plainly stating the objective behind her namesake brand.

Beloved for its debut collection of tea and salad sets and bowls, as well as its more recent creative collaborations with brands such as Peace Industry, Heath Ceramics is finally getting the documentary treatment it deserves. And what could be more appropriate for the iconic American company? After all, it was by devising an elegantly minimal visual language and applying it to the sleek stoneware silhouettes she crafted that Heath established the starting point from which all other modern American pottery progressed.
