An Expanding Table That Doesn't Constrict Style

Infusion Furniture's Transformer Table switches from hanging in the corner to dominating the dining area without sacrificing an iota of quality design.

Yes, necessity mothers most inventions—particularly ones of the space-saving variety. But in the case of Infusion Furniture’s expanding Transformer Table, it wasn’t just a reaction to cramped corners. As is so often in the case in the better areas of design, the creation of the piece from Quentin Kelley’s Boston-based practice, it was the response to a client’s brief that started the gears turning.

“We developed this piece for a client with a very specific vision of a convertible table,” says Kelley. “She didn’t have a space for a dedicated dining table in her South End condo, but hosted dinner parties often.” He continues, “She also wanted a narrow footprint when the table was closed and against the wall. Other tables didn’t offer the narrow footprint and range of expansion required.”

So, Kelley headed to the studio. “It was a design and engineering challenge,” he says, “and we spent considerable time on various iterations before coming up with this solution.” And this solution is wonderfully simple, efficient, and desirable, something that can’t be said for many expanding tables which are usually created as a second thought from and produced by less-than-top-tier studios.

Here, the Transformer Table not only hits all the various functional marks—switching from a 12-inch wide wall-hugger to a 36-inch-wide centerpiece with relative ease—but offers up something to look at thanks to its weighty woods, finer detailing, and declarative form. Convenient, yes, but there are no sacrifices in the name of functionality here.
