Designer, artist, and obsessive collector Sean Wotherspoon—who has lent his imaginative touch to everything from highly sought-after Pokémon plushies to a panel-by-panel reupholstered Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS—has introduced his latest limited-edition collaboration, a label reinterpretation for 480 bottles of 2022 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Named Joyful Kaleidoscope, the artist edition’s colorblocking not only epitomizes Wotherspoon’s vibrant aesthetic but draws attention to details found within the original artwork.
“The label depicts two pieces of Silver Oak history that are never seen together,” Wotherspoon shares with Surface. “They live separately at the vineyard but here on the label they are together. I want people to do the deep dive. Let the color bring you in. Let the color show you detail. Let the color tell you a story.” Wotherspoon was drawn to the idea of collaborating with such a recognizable label—stepping in only to add an artist’s touch.
Wotherspoon, long a vintage devotee (and, in fact, Gap’s Global Vintage Curator), here approaches a different type of vintage. “Everything I do is deeply rooted in vintage. What I love about vintage, whether we’re talking about cars, watches, clothing—or wine—is that older is better. It has so much more character. There is so much more story,” he says. With Silver Oak, he’s crafted a design that he hopes will age well (to become a future vintage item itself) alongside the liquid.
A person of many interests, Wotherspoon is always questing for new collaborative categories. Wine felt like a natural fit. Underscoring this is the all-encompassing nature of collectible design. “I love the idea that all cultures are intersecting right now. For the super-fan of, say, a musician, to also own the socks that the musician made, the hat, the watch, the backpack, that is so cool. You get to live in the world of something you love. That’s what I am trying to create with my projects.”
“Our label has remained consistent over the years because it’s part of who we are. Inviting Sean to reinterpret it wasn’t about changing that identity; it was about seeing it through a new creative lens,” Silver Oak Chief Marketing Officer Lauren Larrabee adds. “His love of vintage Americana made him a natural partner to bring fresh energy to one of our most anticipated annual releases.” In fact, the limited-edition release represents Silver Oak’s first-ever artist-designed bottle.
