DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Objects of Common Interest

For a studio called Objects of Common Interest, the husband-wife architects and product designers Leonidas Trampoukis and Eleni Petaloti opt for a decidedly uncommon approach that yields “moments of unfamiliar simplicity.” Their outlook has so far proven fruitful—the Brooklyn- and Athens-based studio has become known for an array of memorable objects that range from marshmallow-like lounge chairs and Acropolis-inspired side tables to a series of tube lights and benches, currently on view at the Noguchi Museum, that serve as a modern-day conduit for the celebrated sculptor’s explorations of the in-between.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Among our favorites are Tube Chair and Tube Lights.

Describe the problem your work solves: Translating complex thoughts in simple forms with multiple layers of reading.

Describe the project you’re working on now: We have just opened two solo shows in two weeks, at Carwan Gallery, Athens, and at ALCOVA during Salone for Etage Projects. We recently opened another solo show at the Noguchi Museum on September 15. In parallel, we’re designing two architectural projects with our sibling architecture studio LOT: a townhouse extension and renovation in Williamsburg, New York, and a rehabilitation and extension of a ‘60s modernist house in Athens.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: A show at Etage Projects in Copenhagen in October 2021. A book project on the works in collaboration with the Noguchi Museum to be published towards the end of the year or early 2022. A new collection of furniture with the Los Angeles furniture company DIMS. We’re opening a fabrication facility for casting acrylic resin in a new warehouse in the Piraeus port in Athens, where we’ll be experimenting with our own work and also fabricating for others.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Sunlight!

What you do when you’re not working: Hanging out with our son.

Sources of creative envy: We don’t envy—we look at various sources constantly: art, fashion, design, the city, and nature.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Flight layovers.
